10 Simple Practices That Transform Your Emotional Health

Our emotions are everything.  When you feel anger, anxiety, stress, or depression, everything else in your life follows that pattern.  When you feel joyful, motivated, and uplifted, everything else in your life follows that pattern.

Your emotions make your life.

So, why are we all so focused on food, supplements, diet books, to-do lists, social media, etc., and not focusing on feeling good?  I don’t know why we do this!  I did it for years myself, too.  I was sick and kept trying to “fix” myself with physical things – diet changes, supplements, exercise, etc.  But, my root problem wasn’t physical.  It was that I felt stressed, anxious, and overwhelmed more than happy.  So, stressful diet changes (among other things) were just making it worse.

If we can slow down enough to focus on feeling happy, life changes.

Rather than thinking, “what would make me healthiest right now?” (because that usually comes with some added stress of not eating the food you crave, canceling dinner plans with friends, your kids feeling sad they can’t indulge in birthday party food, having to go into debt over expensive supplements, etc.), try thinking, “what would make me HAPPIEST right now?”.

And, guess what happens when you simply focus on making yourself happy?  You reach that level of health you’ve been so desperately grasping for.  Because, in the end, don’t they really go hand in hand?  If you aren’t happy, does health really even matter that much?  You can’t be miserable AND happy.  They don’t co-exist.

Joy Is Your Natural State

As humans, we are wired to seek out pleasure and joy.  When we are in the flow of happiness, our lives seem to smooth out.  Health comes naturally.

“I’ve decided to be happy because it’s good for my health.”
–Voltaire

If you have been on the rollercoaster of finding the “perfect” diet, losing the extra weight, achieving “perfect” health, getting out of debt, etc., then it might be time to simply focus on your emotional wellness for a while.  After bringing joy back into your life, your life is guaranteed to improve.

When we feel good, we thrive.  Don’t miss out on the joy that’s already in your life.  Happiness is here, available to you today.  It’s not off in the distance for when you lose the weight, get the new house, etc.  You can align yourself with a joyful life today.  Best part is, it’s way easier than you think.

So, just for today, drop the rules and pressures you’ve put on yourself.  Give yourself a break.  Go have fun instead.  See how you feel afterwards, and let me know.

10 Simple Daily Practices That Support Emotional Wellness

Don’t feel like you need to incorporate all of these into your life.  Pick one or two that speak to you, and try them a couple days a week.  Remember, this isn’t about being “perfect”, this is about being happy.

1.     Daily Gratitude.  Gratitude is one of the most powerful healing emotions ever.  Feeling gratitude for things you already enjoy in your life is the quickest way to open the door to the new things you want.  Every morning before even getting out of bed say (outloud is best) 3 things you are grateful for.  Every night, right before falling asleep, say 3 things you were grateful for that day.  This is a fun, energy-shifting activity to do with your spouse.   It’s also a great habit to start with children.

2.     Let Go of Outside Stress.  We all pick up lots of stress and negative energy from the world around us.  I see this with clients all the time when I release absorbed trapped emotions.  This can be the stressed feeling you “pick up” after going to a crowded grocery store, or the grief you feel after a friend tells you a sad story.  This negative energy can bring your happiness level down quick, and it’s important to release it daily.  Each evening, you can repeat the affirmation, “I now release everything in my body, mind, and spirit that isn’t mine.”, with the intention that you are letting go of all outside influence, stress, and negative emotions.

3.     Empowered Self Care.  This isn’t your “Netflix and binge” type of self care.  True self care is doing things that will bring you lasting happiness.  Getting a massage, an appointment with your energy medicine practitioner, going for a walk in nature, taking an Epsom salt bath, lovingly using essential oils on yourself during the day, or indulging in a romantic date night with your partner are all good examples of authentic self care.  Simply put, incorporating self care into your daily habits is essential to your overall well-being.  For more insight on what empowered self care really looks like, check out this blog post ---> The Life Changing Habit of Empowered Self Care

4.     Joy Habits.  Similar to self care, joy habits are little pockets of happiness built into your day.  I believe every day should be celebrated, and joy habits are the way to do it.  Again, this will look different for everyone.  It doesn’t have to be complicated though.  Turning on some fun music, watching a funny TV show, calling a friend, going out to lunch, spending a few minutes looking in a book store,  or playing a game are all good examples.  What else can joy habits do for you?   Check out this blog post about how joy habits helped me kick my sugar addiction ---> Want To Kick Your Sugar Habit?  Do This First!

5.     Down Time.  As an introvert, down time is critical for my well-being.  I fought it for years.  I thought that I should be able to go out and be busy all the time.  But, I know that my personality requires daily down time.  Without it, I crash.  Even if it’s just a few minutes here or there, try to incorporate some daily relaxation time.  I love to spend my evenings, after the kids are in bed, chatting and reconnecting with my husband over a cup of tea.  These relaxation habits help us unwind and release daily stress.

6.     Movement.  Moving our bodies is essential to our physical and mental health.  Think back to childhood, before your idea of physical movement became tainted with modern exercise habits, to when movement was actually fun.  Moving our bodies should be fun.  Exercise should never be punishment.  It’s self care.  Moving your body isn’t about losing weight, it’s about reconnecting with yourself, releasing pent up stress, and feeling joy in the moment.  So, get outside, enjoy the sunshine, and do what feels best for you that day.  If it’s a simple walk around the block, that’s perfect!  No rules.

7.     Positivity.  Surround yourself with positive words, positive people, and tools that promote a positive mindset.  See how long you can go without complaining about anything.  Turn on inspiring music that lifts your soul.  Print off affirmations and put them up around your home.  Some of my favorite ones are listed here --> Affirmations I Used to Heal From Auto-Immune Disease.  Turn on some uplifting podcast’s while you do house chores.  I love anything by Hay House and Jessica Ortner’s Adventures in Happiness.  Listen to joy, speak joy, feel joy.

8.     Community.  We need other people to support us in happiness.  A wise doctor once told me that we need community to heal.  So, set up a lunch date, make a weekly pizza night with friends, join a book club, go to a park, go to the library and chat with someone, smile at the cashier, go camping, go to the pool, simply get out of your house and go talk to a few people.  This habit is good for over-thinkers, as it helps us get out of our own heads.

9.     Grounding.  Time in nature is something I tell my clients to do a lot.  Connecting with the earth can heal our bodies and minds in some pretty incredible ways.  I talk about this in both of my ebooks (which can be found here).  The Earth puts off a electromagnetic energy that neutralizes stress in our bodies.  Getting fresh air is one of the things I do every day to keep myself balanced, healthy, and happy.  I know it sounds funny, but go hug a tree.  Touch the ground with your bare feet.  Thank Mother Earth for her healing energy.

10.  Daily Energetic Clearing.  We need daily habits of clearing out energetic stress and traumas.  I do this everyday for clients, and I also do it for myself.  So, this can be as complex as setting up repeating sessions with your energy medicine practitioner, or there are simple things you can do at home.  Emotional Freedom Technique is a great tool that anyone can learn how to do.  If you have your copy of The Handbook For Healing, follow along with the script I use everyday to have the best day ever.  If you don’t have that, there are lots of other EFT videos on my blog and around the web.  Brad Yates has lots of choose from on his YouTube channel.  Spending a few minutes doing this everyday can do wonders for your emotional health.

Why Joy Is More Important Than Food

I’ve been where a lot of you are today.  Several years ago I was sick, and my kids were sick.  I spent almost 10 years totally depleted and exhausted from chasing my tail in the world of natural healing and trying to find the "perfect diet"

As you know, food is a huge part of alternative healing.  Somewhere early in my path of healing Hashimotos, adrenal fatigue, food intolerances, anxiety, and my son’s Autism Spectrum Disorder, food became more than just food.  As I dived into research, everything I read pointed to food as the culprit of all my family’s health issues.  I started worrying about every bite of food that passed our lips.

Then I started the downward spiral of jumping from one restrictive diet to the next.  A lot of stress, time, and expensive food later, not much had changed.

I felt even more exhausted than before.  I had an overabundance of advice, but no real answers.  It is hard to be a mother wanting to heal herself and her children, with nothing but conflicting opinions.  Do I eat meat, or no meat?  Dairy, is it going to heal me or kill me?  Is this raw spinach really wrecking my thyroid?  And on, and on, and on...

Sound familiar?

Everywhere you turn, there is new information or “science” telling us what foods to eat and what foods to avoid.  We see stories of how people have lost weight, gained weight, cured cancer, gotten cancer, healed pain, created pain, etc. – all through what they are or aren’t eating.

We have given food so much power over our lives – particularly our health.  And it’s exhausting people and causing a great deal of anxiety.  I have had to work through this myself, and I see it with clients all the time.  Well intentioned, health conscious people come to me overly stressed about food on a weekly basis.

The Stress Is Worse Than The Food

It’s not the food, but the STRESS that’s making everyone sick.  The stress is worse for your health than the food.  A lack of joy can create ill health quicker than “bad” food can.

The fear mongering in the alternative health community has taken its toll on all of us, and it’s time to step up and take back our joy!

Joy, laughter, and play stimulate the release of feel good hormones in our body.  It shuts down cortisol, adrenaline, and other health deteriorating processes in the body.  Our body can’t heal when it’s in a state of stress.  So, it makes sense that if you’re stressing about food, you aren’t healing.

“Have you ever heard the old saying that laughter is the best medicine? Science is starting to prove that it’s true! Laughter sets off a chain reaction in the body that promotes physical and mental health. Laughter lowers stress hormones like cortisol and adrenaline. Laughter also strengthens the immune sys- tem and relaxes the nervous system. Laughter and play clear the mind and decrease anxiety and nervousness.

'Don’t think about fun as a reward,' writes Richard Branson, 'think of it as a responsibility.'

When the body is in a state of relaxation, it has the opportunity to heal. A quick way to get into that relaxed state is to play and laugh."  –from A Handbook for Healing

What Happened When I Dropped The Food Stress?

So, what happened when I dropped the stress about food and just focused on cultivating gratitude and joy in my life?  Pretty incredible things, actually.  When I stopped believing I was broken, dropped the struggle, and finally let go, I HEALED.  I was always searching for the big secret to my health.  I thought there was one big mysterious puzzle piece that I had missed.  And, there was.  But, it wasn’t a superfood, a supplement, a modality, or anything like that.  It was JOY.

Your divine purpose isn’t to have a perfect diet and stress about food.  Your divine purpose is to feel joy, spread joy, love, forgive, and share your gifts with the world.

Sometimes we get so caught up in healing, that we forget to enjoy our lives.  So, just for today, put the diet books down and go play.  Have a dance party.  Go the park.  Play a game.  Go to lunch with a friend.  Watch a funny movie.  Let joy fill your body, and watch your health transform!

Have you ever noticed how your emotional health impacts your physical health?

The Life Changing Habit of Empowered Self Care

If you are a client of mine, or have been reading the blog, you know I like to take the loving approach to facilitate change.  Love is the only place where all lasting healing comes from.  And, for that lasting healing to take place in our own lives, we have to extend love to ourselves.

I’m sure most of you have all heard something about the self love movement.  It’s a new idea that is turning a lot of heads.  As a collective society, we have spent a lot of time trying to hate and shame ourselves into change.  We criticize ourselves and others over every little “flaw”.  Every magazine we see at the store is plastered with advertisements on how to get a better body, a new workout or diet to try, and tips on how to get people to like you.  Everyday we are bombarded with pictures of photo shopped men and women, weight loss products, and dietary dogma.  It’s no wonder we hate our bodies, feel confused about our health, and just end up settling for sugar and TV at the end of the day.

To counteract these false belief systems, the self love movement has begun.  This movement consists of mostly women who have decided to turn their backs on the standards and expectations of society.  The message is ‘love yourself the way you are’.  I support this idea 1,000%.  Because, again, if we don't look at healing (from disease, emotional eating, anxiety, pain, etc.) from a place of love, real change wont happen.  It’s imperative that we do love and accept ourselves today, the way we are right now.  When we appreciate our bodies the way they are, we open the door to healing.

Empowered Self Care vs. Destructive Self Care

I want to make something else clear.  With that self love, also comes the need for self empowerment.  Without the element of empowerment, we can end up using “self love” as an excuse for self destructive behaviors.  Because, and listen up now...

Loving ourselves cannot be used as an excuse for going on junk food and Netflix binges.

One more time...loving ourselves cannot be used as an excuse for going on junk food binges (or any other unhealthy habit).  When we truly love and accept ourselves, we are able to break away from the fear, the patterns, and the dependency that drive unhealthy habits.

Don't get me wrong, I'm still a real human.  I love Netflix and ice cream.  I just do it in balance and without emotional attachment.  No guilt, no shame, and no overjoy either.

There is a big difference between changing "bad" habits out of shame, guilt, and essentially self hate versus changing those same habits from a place of empowerment, self love, and gratitude.  Eating healthy, exercising, sharing your passions with the world, and living abundantly – this is true self care.  It is only when we are standing in the flow of our own personal power, that we can truly nurture, serve, and love others.

I had a misconception of self care and self love for years.  I thought that my self demeaning habits – eating junk food, skipping workouts, and playing down my gifts – was taking care of myself.  The food brought comfort.  Laying low kept me protected.  Or so I thought.

I realized that staying in that place was the deepest form of self rejection and denial.  I was rejecting my true nature.  My true nature, and all of our true natures, thrive in health and authentic self care.  And, when we are in that place of empowered self love, we can thrive in service, charity, and love for others.

Support in Empowered Self Care

Asking others – your spouse, family, or friends – to assist in self destructive behaviors isn’t support.  It’s ok to be different.  It’s ok to change.  We don’t have to keep living in old patterns just because “it’s the way we were raised” or “everyone else is doing it”.  It’s time we support ourselves in empowered change, and ask for the support we need from others.  Tell your spouse or significant other, that you are making a change.  And, if you aren’t finding support in outside sources, support yourself.  Always support your authentic self.  When we aren’t living our truth, we will feel it.  I did this for years.  And, wow, I was uncomfortable!  I was overweight, broke, exhausted, sick, and overwhelmed.

So, find others who are on the same journey and stick together.  Extend the love you wish to feel for yourself, to others.

To Sum It Up...

Indulging in junk food is not self care.  Denying yourself health, wealth, or thriving relationships isn’t self care.  It’s quieting your power.  It’s stepping down from your life and essentially saying, “not today, thanks anyways”.  Authentic self care is daily habits that empower a person towards greater health, wealth, passion, and purpose.

Examples of Empowered Self Care

What does empowered self care look like in real life?  It can mean many different things to you.  And, it may change everyday.  But, here are a few examples of true self care.

- epsom salt bath at the end of a long day

- going for a walk in nature

- stretching

- enjoying a warm cup of tea and a good book....at 3pm...for no reason at all

- going to lunch with a friend

- turning on music and cooking a delicious, nourishing meal for yourself

- sitting under the moon and journaling everything you are grateful for

- taking a nap when you are tired, without guilt

- having a dance party with your kids (or by yourself!)

- starting up a community tradition (dinner swaps, friday night pizza and a movie with friends, etc.)

- having a designated "snow day" once a month - stay in, read good books, watch funny movies, and play games

What are your favorite empowered self care habits?

How To Bypass the Health Mistake Almost Everyone is Making

It’s no secret that I believe in putting the joy back into health.  The natural health community has been a breeding ground for fear for a long time.  Everywhere we look, we read something else about how horrible a certain food is for you, that there are toxins lurking in your bathroom, and that even the air you breathe may be killing you.

And, do you feel anymore healthy?  Nah, didn’t think so.  That’s because it’s the FEAR that’s making our society sick.

You want to eat healthy, you want to have energy, you want to do the best things for yourself and your family.  But, you also have a life.  How do you find that balance?  You have work, kids, dishes, laundry, emails, and a million other things going on.  How do we strike that balance between enjoying a natural healthy lifestyle and also just simply enjoying our life?

Health is not about stressing over every detail or doing everything perfectly.

In fact, that's the opposite of health.

I would honestly rather see someone eating Krispy Kreme donuts for breakfast and Cheetos for lunch and actually happy... than to see one more mom burned out, half-crazy with stress, and feeling like a giant failure because she's trying to feed her family the "perfect" diet.

Maybe that's just me.

If you're like me and dead tired of the stress and perfectionism that comes with "healthy" living -- then you're probably in the right place.
